Just like us adults, our kids lack motivation sometimes and start to lose interest in their sport or being active. As a parent it can be hard to know what to do when your child doesn't want to go to training or compete anymore. We've put together a few tips on ways to help keep your child motivated and loving what they do.

1: LET THEM CHOOSE THIER SPORT

Its common to want your child to follow in your footsteps and do the same sport you did as a child but it isn't always the right choice. Talk to your child about their interests, go to different sports games, take them for various trials at clubs so they can experience a variety of options. They'll be the most motivated if they have made the decision themselves on what sport to play.

2. WATCH THEIR SPORT TOGETHER

It's easy for your child to get bores when they are training so regularly and often. Its easy for them to forget how talented they actually are when their sport is such a regular part of their life. Watch games with your child or look up amazing examples of their sport on YouTube to help keep them interested. When they can see the possibilities of what they will one day be able to achieve they'll be itching to get back to training.

3. PRACTICE & PLAY WITH YOUR CHILD

Look at this as a win win. It will get you up and moving and there's nothing your child will love more than when you get involved in their sport. It can be fun, hilarious and a great way to have some much-needed family time. Take the soccer ball to the park or have a handstand competition. My girls love it when they coach me. They try to teach me the perfect handstand technique and stretch me to do the splits. It always ends in deep belly laughs and they feel super chuffed with themselves that they are so much more talented than their mama.

5. CONGRATULATE EFFORT

Every child is different but its common for them to soon feel the pressure of wanting to win games, get trophies or move up quickly in the sport. They can lose interest quickly or feel defeated when something doesn't go their way. Make sure to always celebrate the small wins. Congratulate their effort and the hard work they put in. Take them out for a treat for simply trying their best or achieving a new skill or technique. They'll love you for it!

6. GET NEW SPORTS GEAR

Nothing motivates you to go to the gym like a new sportswear outfit right?! Kids are the same. If they're lacking a bit of the love they usually have, why not get them a new gymnastics leotard, football, sports bag or drink bottle. They'll be excited to get back to the club to show everyone their new gear.

7. TAKE PHOTOS & VIDEOS

Document everything! When my girls get a bit disappointed or frustrated with themselves for not being able to do a particular skill, I look back at old videos of them at training or competitions. It's a great way to show them just how far they've come. And when they can see how far they've come they will get excited for how far they can go.

8. FRIEND MEET UPS

The friends your child will make from an out of school sport are invaluable. Encourage growing that friendship. Arrange catchups with their teammates often. It doesn't have to be sport related at all but when associating with like-minded people with similar interests there is nothing more motivating.

9. ATTEND GAMES OR COMPS

Stay interested. Attend games or competitions that your child isn't attending. Especially those that include higher performance levels than what your child is currently performing at. Seeing athletes perform at a higher level in a real life setting will leave them awestruck and motivated to give it their all.
